15 years ago I had the excellent idea of getting my lazy ass back into sport and signed up for the Bangor 10k. As the years went by I got a little bit quicker and the boys got a whole lot bigger.
Somewhere along the way I decided to carry a £10 note in my pocket each race day, and build a prize fund for the boys, a jackpot which could be claimed by the first child to beat my course record, in their home town event.
As I worked relentlessly to cut down my time I imagined it building up over the years into something large enough to fund a house deposit but in reality it got to the level of a fancy pair of trainers and was raided at the first available opportunity!
The competitor in me winces at how easily Alex took down my time (by 2 minutes, in training mode) but the proud father has loved sharing this special race with his family and was simply delighted to write the cheque.
